i found this guy:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
say i can get it to my house for $100o. Its going to need a new motor. I want to do a transmission swap to make it manual. Parti-killer Parti-vi pointed out that there are no manual XJ’s. I was thinking maybe I could do an engine/transmission swap. so my questions:
What would you do? Overall budget should be $8k or under.the more under the better. Could I do my first thought is a V8 out of a mustang? I figured maybe its easier to take a transmission and engine together than try to put two unrelated ones together. (like a jag engine with who knows what for a tranny)
edit: this is one thing i’ve found so far.

The only real option for a manual swap in there is either a wrecked 5.0 mustang or a small block

Oh - I lied. There are manual transmission XJs, but they’re all old and in Europe. You might be able to get parts shipped over here.
ETA: BiTurbo228 was working on a manual swap for a Jag XJ - see if you can find him on here and pick his brain.

SBC or LS motor and a Manual valve bodied auto transmission. No clutch but still pick your own gear. Fun fact the V12 jags used a GM Turbo 400 3 speed auto transmission.

the thing has 390 hp in R trim 290 hp in standard trims. V70Rs are cruisers and come with manuals....

A quick google shows that there aren’t any good easy manual conversions for the AJ-V8 anyways.
Supercharged 4v mod motor it is.

What’s the point of a manual XJ? Are you really going to hoon 2 tons of British luxobarge?

yes. well probably not, but i fell in love with manual with the WRX and would like it to be on my next car. The WRX will be traded for a Flex at some point and handed over to my wife which leaves me with an empty hole in my heart. I think a manual XJ would fill it quite nicely.

A Chevy would be cheaper and easier to get parts for. I would not go with a 5.0L. They’re a PITA.

A V70 is not a 2 tone brit luxo car. its 3500lbs. about the same a modern 3 series. it is NOT a cruiser. (or at least not anywhere as close to a cruiser as this thing it)

Many moons ago I had a boss with a manual 1987 Jag, it was just all wrong to drive, I was also going out with someone who's dad had a same shape (they were the square looking ones) but a lot newer Jag Sovereign, which due to the joys of business insurance, he would let us use occasionally, it was an auto and it felt so much more right. These cars should not have a manual gearbox.

I’ve always felt the XJ (I recently sold a S3 XJ12) isn’t a car that benefits from a manual transmission. I mean yeah, it’s a cool idea, but it’s going to be a LOT of fabrication work.
Also, with Jags you really want to get the absolute best car you can get to start with. That one in Fall River looks pretty decent...my grandparents live like 5 minutes from that dealer.
I definitely support the idea of a stick shift XJ8, it just seems like something I could see dropping 8k into and it’s halfway finished.

the VDP is the cush-fancy sibling among the XJ’s.
if you do go this route, i’m sure you’d appreciate the additional lux on the inside, but wrt the mechanicals, the suspension is going to be softer, less taut, i think, that what you want.

It can be done... well, something can be done... this is an XKR, but i’m nearly positive the XK shared a drivetrain with the XJ of similar years.

yea, i really dont want to give up having a manual car so its looking like this will not be happening. if there was an easy and cheap way of doing a manual swap then maybe, but not as it stands today.
